Yoga #16 : Lungs and breath

This video introduces breathing with the lungs.

Lungs and diaphragm

During classes with Eva Karczag, we were introduced to some useful images of the lungs.

I did not realise how much space the lungs were taking, in the ribcage. They are very present at the front, but also on the sides and at the back.

When we inhale, our lungs inflate and push our diaphragm, the breath muscle, down. The abdomen fills with the organs. When we exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and the lungs narrow.

It can be very useful to have this mental image of the big lungs, and the diaphragm, while breathing.

Breathing with awareness of the lungs

Take your time to sit down. It can be on the floor, but also on a chair, a sofa…

Then, close your eyes and simply bring attention to your breath. Do not try to change it. Just notice the path of the air. It comes in your body through your nostrils, your trachea… And it fills your lungs. After the inhalation, the air leaves your body, rejecting the wastes, when you exhale.

What do you notice? Can you imagine the movement of your lungs? Of your diaphragm?

Does it resonate within the rest of your body ?

Don’t expect of judge anything, just notice your sensations.

Keep breathing deeply

Keep breathing in your everyday life. It is so important, especially these days!
